It seems that to rank well in most of the major search engines, you need to have a serious link building campaign in full tilt. Managing those links is another story completely. We use the free link manager from ClickSentry.com and it is a joy to use. If you use excel or some other program that you can export your data out of, you can import it right into the link manager in one step. The weekly reports keep us informed of the status of all of our links including 3-ways and recips.
Getting your website listed in web directories is a great way to market your website and build links as well. There are some great new directories out there like the Deregular Directory which hand review all of the sites that are included.
